ACL Teams Mock Draft:
I love nothing more than a good draft. Being a full blown sports honk, the draft season is a time I always look forward to. Hearing that NFL draft chime…I get chills. When I heard the ACL was adding a team event this year AND having a live draft for our enjoyment, I was excited. Will it still feel like a draft without a room full of people booing the Commissioner? Will fans of a team still cheer even when they have no idea who it is their team selected? I for one hope the ACL, at the very least, came up with their own “the pick is in” jingle. I guess we will all have to wait and see!
Below is my first round “mock draft”. Each selection I mention two names: 1) Who I think will be selected 2) Who I think they should/could select! Let’s have some fun and take a shot at it!
Pick Number:
1) Carpetburners (Ryan Smith): With the 1st pick of the ACL team draft, the Carpet burners select….Matt Guy. Guy has been off to the races early this season putting up ridiculous PPR numbers. Back to a smooth, methodical step and throw, Matt looks poised to help this young franchise make a deep run
My Selection: Matt Guy: this should be a slam dunk, don’t over think it. Take the GOAT and be happy
2) Rollers (Adam Hissner): With the 2nd pick of the ACL team draft, the Rollers select….Jordan Power. Power burst onto the scene during his rookies season and seems poised for a top 10-15 finish (at worst?). I like the edge he plays with..I think Hissner respects that
My Selection: Tony Smith is as talented as they come. The team name fits him perfectly and Hissner regularly travels to the Northeast for regional events. These two have faced off several times. Might be a long shot, but I think it could make sense
3) Woodchucks (Cheyenne Renner): With the 3rd pick of the ACL team draft, the Woodchucks select….James Baldwin. A nod of approval goes to Renner’s new pro partner as they are fresh off an open doubles win. I know I know, the first pick doesn’t have to play with the captain…but sometimes politics comes into play and it’s not like Baldwin is lacking round 1 talent
My Selection: Josh Holland. One of the most hyped rookies to enter this class, Renner and Holland play a similar style game. I think Holland is one of, if not the most talented individuals available…so why not take him?
4) Maize (James Washington): With the 4th pick of the ACL team draft, the Maize select….Jay Rubin. It’s still shocking to me that Rubin isn’t a captain. I’m sure he isn’t thrilled either. Widely regarded as one of the best players in the game, Rubin here just makes sense to me. If Washington wants to pick someone to play with..why not stick with “Team Ultra”?
My Selection: Leston Allen. Hailing from the same conference, these two are familiar with each other’s game. Allen is back and already off to a nice start statistically speaking. This pick just makes sense to me
5) Bombers (Jimmy McGuffin): With the 5th pick of the ACL team draft, the Bombers select….Greg Geary. These two have been teammates the last two seasons and have found success. Last year, despite battling injuries, McGuffin pulled off a top 15 finish. I think Mcguffin gives a nod to his very steady, talented doubles partner
My Selection: Eric Zocklein. These two are from the same conference and have battled many times I can imagine. Perhaps Jimmy wants to give a nod to KY
6) Shuckers (Mike Ferreira): With the 6th pick of the ACL team draft, the Shuckers select….Josh Holland. Holland makes the most sense to me here. Mike seems to be the kind of player that can adapt and play with just about anyone. Being a cerebral type player/captain, picking the best player on the board would make sense
My Selection: Tanner Halbert. Both playing out of the state of Florida, again I can see this pick going a variety of ways. Being that he is originally a NE guy..hell he could scoop up Tony Smith here too
7) Gushers (Eric Anderson): With the 7th pick of the ACL team draft, the Gushers select….Tanner Halbert. I think EA will take best player available here. Having Halbert fall to the 7th spot would be a nice little steal for Anderson without a doubt.
My Selection: Jamie Graham..You simply can’t go wrong with either pick at this spot. I don’t see both Halbert and Graham being taken in the first 6 picks..this leaves EA in a nice position
8) Timber (Steven Bernacet): With the 8th pick of the ACL team draft, the Timber select….Jamie Graham. The first round is all about scooping up talent. Obviously this is all a guessing game. But if I found myself in Steven’s shoes…and Graham was still sitting there…well it’d be an easy pick
My Selection: Tom Gustafson..I know it’s a boring pick. But this is a doubles event..these two have not lost to many teams…makes sense to me
9) Cutters (Eddie Grinderslev): With the 9th pick of the ACL team draft, the Cutters select….Josh Groce. It’s be too predictable to pick Batson here, so Im taking a shot. Eddie sticks with the Texas GOAT club and goes with the steady veteran Groce
My Selection: Kaleb Batson. Boring I know..almost too predictable. But they kid is good and they play well together and has plenty of talent to be a first rounder
10) Bullies (Erick Davis): With the 10th pick of the ACL team draft, the Bullies select….Duncan Clemmer. Sticking with that Carolina Conference, Davis scoops up Clemmer who has been trending upward since he first joined the ACL last season
My Selection: Frank Modlin. Again sticking with the Carolina Conference, Davis picks someone he is familiar with and is a damn talented dude
11) Skunks (Devon Harbaugh): With the 11th pick of the ACL team draft, the Skunks select….Tony Smith. These two often travel together in the same group and play a similar style game. Not that they would necessarily play together, but getting a player as talented as Smith this deep would be a steal in my opinion
My Selection: Noah Wooten. Keeping team Kontraband together makes sense. I feel most of that crew will represented across one or two teams
12) Sliders (Bret Guy): With the 12th pick of the ACL team draft, the Sliders select…. Jeff Reynolds. These two have a long standing relationship and Jeff is a steady professional. On the boards, both of these guys are straight business and I feel it makes sense
My Selection: I’m going with Jimmy Youmans here because I think he has shown he has the talent to belong amongst these first round individuals. If I were in Bret’s shoes..and Youmans was there…I’d be happy to start my team off with that
13) Aviators (Cody Henderson): With the 13th pick of the ACL team draft, the Aviators select…. Frank Modlin. Cody Had posted earlier this week on Twitter that he wanted to draft people who would want to be on his team. Frank is a competitor and all around class act. This pick makes sense for Cody in my mind
My Selection: This one was really tough for me. Cody has been on the Big Asp Conrnhole podcast twice and has admitted he doesn’t follow players…I’m saying he goes with Dave Sutton. Cody is not active on Social Media, but when he is, it is on Twitter. Sutton is an excellent Twitter follow and regularly comments on Cody’s tweets…maybe this is enough to cath his eye? Doesn’t hurt that Sutton is solid player either
14) Lumberjacks (Daymon Dennis): With the 14th pick of the ACL team draft, the Lumberjacks select….Philip Haydon. It is hard for me to imagine Dennis taking someone else besides Haydon with his first pick. These two have battled together for years..he deserves that nod
My Selection: I thoroughly believe it will be Haydon, but to shake things up…I think he could take Bob Vonch. An individual who he has battled in the senior divison several times and is a very steady professional
15 ) Freeze (Ryan Windsor): With the 15th pick of the ACL team draft, the Freeze select….Noah Wooten. This makes sense to me. Wooten is insanely talented and these two play similar style games, are right around the same age and run with, seemingly, the same crowd. This would be a very solid start to a team
My Selection: Isidro Herrera. Again this is a doubles competition and these two have been among the most dominant doubles teams the last few years. Does it happen? My Gut says no…But the field is just too big to predict otherwise
16) Sharpshooters (Trey Burchfield): With the 16th pick of the ACL team draft, the Sharpshooters select….Derrick King. Trey and Derrick have shown in the past how dominant they can be. Are they still close friends? That I have no idea, but it wouldn’t shock me to see Trey Give his old partner a nod here.
My Selection: Alex Rawls. Fresh off a Bracket winning performance at the Open event in Virginia Beach, Trey could boost his Pro partners confidence by selecting him here.
Well there we have it! I am excited to watch all of this unfold. Make sure to Tune into the Big Asp Cornhole Podcast Next week for a full breakdown!!
