ACL OPEN #9: eRIE, pa rECAP OF THE WEEKEND
OH MY LORD….what a weekend. This past weekend was the ACL open #9 in Erie, PA and it was my first “BIG” tournament. It was cornhole paradise: boards as far as the eyes could see, the sound of bags slapping the board and cornhole merch for days…there was nowhere else I would have wanted to be. Surrounded by friends, watching pros play in person and meeting people from all over the country, I could not have asked for a better weekend. Below is a quick highlight of, what I felt, were the best parts of the weekend
Highlights from this past weekend!!
1. Sean and Dane, of the Big Asp Cornhole Podcast being asked to do the commentary for the Tier 1 doubles!! This was an absolute blast! We were honored to get this opportunity and hope this could be a regular thing going forward
2. Meeting so many of the people we have interviewed in person! Checkout the fun random shit page for the interviews!
3. In a field loaded with talent, Hissner/Henderson get over the hump and win on the big stage. Hissner/Henderson, the 3rd ranked doubles team, outlasts the talented father-son duo out of North Carolina, Josh and Derek Holland (Derek Holland could still pass as Josh’s brothers, I don’t care what anyone says)
4. Sam Finley shows out and wins the Women’s singles event in the pro shootout, demonstrating her full array of skills in that final match.
5. Attending a live broadcast in person!! This was the first of a series of events that will be featured on CBS and CBS Sports Network. It was unreal to see how much work goes on behind the scene. It’s crazy impressive that the pro players can block out the distractions and play at such a high level
6. Matt Guy, going full dad mode, telling Fire Cornhole Owner, Jason McCannon to “Shut the fuck up,” as Jason was shouting advice to Bret Guy during the finals of the Pro shootout. To put it mildly…Jason’s butthole puckered quick
7. Trey Burchfield continues to show he is currently the best singles player in the world as he wins the Tier 1 Singles event. Gold chain out, looking fly as hell…Trey just rolls to a robotic like victory
8. Trevor Brooks and Berklee Pair are entertainment gold. They didn’t win the event, but damn they are fun to watch. In the words of Trevor Brooks, “Be a star today”
9. Seeing Big Asp Cornhole Jerseys and Doghouse Cornhole hats all over the place!!!
10. Chad Webb and Jordan Powers make another deep run. Although they lost in the finals to Bernacet and Gustafson, Chad Webb’s final round in the semi-finals was textbook. Going into the final round of a round limited match, down 4 points, Chad Webb flexed and scores a 6 spot for the win!
11. Bernacet/Gustafson show they belong in the conversation for Team of the year after winning the doubles portion of the pro shootout (they did not participate in the open)
12. You can find some of THE best dressed people in the world at cornhole events
