“It’s like playing on Glass…”

Here’s the scenario: You step up to the board, your favorite set of bags in hand. You stare down the hole, take a deep breath and let the bag fly. You release it perfectly. The bag is spinning tightly, in line with the hole and hits the board right where you want it…..until it takes off like Clark Griswold on a greased up saucer sled shattering land speed records. You might stop and look at your partner and say “Holy, Sh&T! It’s like playing on Glass!!!”

This has been an all too common report from pros as they come back from National events this year. The ACL began manufacturing their own boards for National events and have, in their words, “perfected the process.” Slick bag lovers like Steven Bernacet and Daymon Dennis have reaped the benefits from such playing conditions, while other players who typically throw harder, have struggled. We know…we know…you can’t make everyone happy….

But what if each major event was set up like the major events from Golf or Tennis. Tennis is a great example of how a player can absolutely dominate one particular surface, i.e. Rafeal Nadal on Clay or Roger Federer on Grass. Imagine an ACL major event where the boards are so tacky it seems like every player is playing with OG Razors. Bags get so sticky you have to peel them from the board. Players like Erick Davis and Tony Smith are salivating at the thought of their bags rolling/flopping methodically over pathetic blocker bags. Jimmy McGuffin and Matthew Morton might just say “fuck it”, and airmail every shot (please do that).

On Episode 66 of the Big Asp Cornhole podcast (shameless plug) we asked Trey Ryder what the ACL’s thoughts were on this topic, if any. Low and behold, there is something in the works!! Cornhole Nerds rejoice!! In the non-too distant future, we will get to find out who really are the best players in the world on every type of surface. This is something to get excited about!
